TOM'S MODEL TRAINS

Unfortunately many of the photo links hosted by Photobucket no longer work. I'm in the process of switching to Flickr and replacing the photos here but it is going to take a while for the process to be completed....Tom

After 17 years in Scotch Plains NJ, I decided to close my traditional model train shop and take the business on line from home. A number of factors contributed to this decision, not the least of which has been the decline in the economy.

Many of my regular customers are out of work while a significant number of others have understandably cut back on the money they have allotted for  discretionary spending.

In addition, I’m not getting any younger and while the trade publications are full of    survival strategies, I just don’t have the energy or motivation to pursue these avenues. Besides, while I was still in the process of building the business, I followed many of these suggestions. I’m just not ready to do it all over again….and for what benefit or for whose gain will my efforts be directed? At this point I certainly don’t want to be spending my time working for others.

Now, as home based business, I sell a limited selection of products which have done very well. These include from time to time, 3 rail merchandise from  Williams by Bachman and my own custom built, modified and painted O and HO scale cars and engines along with an ever expanding line of professionally printed, custom decals for the Jersey Central Lines. I try to maintain the complete selection of Peco, HO Scale Code 100 turnouts, slip switches, wyes and crossings. My inventory of Tru-Color paint has been expanding with regularity and now includes most of their railroad colors. You can find these products at my eBay store.

photo ShippingCenter_zps288ce681.jpgI’m looking forward to my new venue. In the short time I’ve been involved with this form of commerce, the internet has provide me with a world wide marketplace that works for me 24 hours a day. Rather than sit on a store shelf in Scotch Plains NJ gathering dust, items from my inventory have found homes far and wide. So far I’ve shipped items to New Zealand, Australia, The Philippines, Canada, Great Brittan, Germany, Russia, France, Portugal, Italy,  Argentina, Malta and at least half of our states including Hawaii and Alaska.

I have thoroughly enjoyed communicating with my new customers via email and by phone. In fact the personal contact that the store provided and which I thought I would miss, has been replaced in very short order. In addition, I now have more time to devote to a scratch building and kit bashing discussion group that I moderate. So it seems that the old adage proves to be true once again…one door closes but others opens.

I’m going to have fun experimenting with this web site. There are so many options available with the site builder that I don’t know where to start. I do know though, that the signal ahead shows high green so please check back here when you can to see what’s new and be sure to follow the link to my eBay store….see you down the track……Tom
